  1. Retrieve the Propane or Mapp Gas or Butane bottle and Self-Lighting Nozzle from the hazardous materials cabinet. Screw the Self-Lighting Nozzle to the Propane or Mapp Gas bottle.

    • Screw the Self-Lighting Nozzle to the Propane or Mapp Gas bottle.

  2. Place front forge door on top pegs.

  3. Open choke plate fully so air intake is unobstructed.

  4. Turn on propane by turning the propane main valve counter clockwise 1/4 turn.

  5. Check propane regulator gauge. Turn regulator knob clockwise until the regulator gauge reads 8 psi.

  6. Turn the propane main valve clockwise 1/4 turn to shut off propane.
    • Turn the propane main valve clockwise 1/4 turn to shut off propane.

  7. Close the choke plate until the air intake is 3/4 covered

  8. Hold unlit propane or Mapp Gas or Butane nozzle in the front forge opening.
    • Hold unlit propane or Mapp Gas or Butane nozzle in the front forge opening.

  9. Turn on propane by turning the propane main valve counter clockwise 1/4 turn.

  10. Keeping clear of the front forge opening (standing to the side with the Mapp Gas or Butane nozzle in the front forge opening) Light the torch and ignite the propane in the forge.

  11. Open the choke plate until the air intake is 1/2 covered.
    • Open the choke plate until the air intake is 1/2 covered.

    • If the flame in the forge goes out, close the propane tank valve, wait 60 seconds for any unburned propane to clear and restart the lighting procedure.

  12. Using tongs, move front forge door to lowest pegs.

  13. Turn off Propane or Mapp Gas or Butane torch (if still lit) and put aside in a safe place.

  14. After a couple of minutes once the inside surfaces of the forge are becoming incandescent, open the choke plate until the air intake is 1/4 covered.

    • Let run for 10-15 minutes to come up to temperature.

  15. Once the inside of the forge is consistently incandescent, open choke plate until air intake is unobstructed.

  16. Turn Propane Regulator knob counterclockwise until Regulator Gauge reads 5 psi. If you are working large material, you may wish to run the forge at a higher psi (up to 10 psi). Be aware that at higher psi the forge will use significantly more fuel. Please do not be wasteful!

    • You are now ready to work with the forge!

  17. Turn Main Propane Valve 1/4 turn clockwise to shut off propane.
    • Turn Main Propane Valve 1/4 turn clockwise to shut off propane.

    • Insure that the valve is tightly closed.

  18. Using tongs, move front forge door to the top pegs. Using tongs, move front forge door to the top pegs.
    • Using tongs, move front forge door to the top pegs.

  19. Attend until the forge interior is no longer glowing.
    • Attend until the forge interior is no longer glowing.
