  1. Safety glasses must be worn at all times when using the jointer (and whenever in the wood shop and metal shop areas.) Chips can be ejected into your face and eyes during operation of the machine. If you need to inspect the cutter head, turn off and unplug the machine. Hearing protection must be worn when operating this machine.

    • Hearing protection must be worn when operating this machine.

    • The jointer is very loud when in operation. Others in the shop area should be warned to wear hearing protection as well before starting work.

    • Dust collection is required when operating this machine.

    • Do not operate without a dust collector attached and operating. This machine generates a large amount of chips when operating. Operating the machine without dust collection will allow chips to accumulate inside the machine, potentially damaging it.

  2. Do not reach inside the machine when it is running. The machine has spinning knives that can seriously injure you if you come into contact with them. Avoid placing your hands over the exposed areas of the cutter when operating the machine. Never operate the machine with the blade guards removed or disabled. Operations which require the removal of the guards MAY NOT be performed on this machine (no exceptions.)

  5. Protecting the Knives
    • Protecting the Knives

    • The knives on the jointer can be easily nicked leaving raised lines on the material surface that need to be removed with scraping or sanding. Once nicked, the knives must be removed and sent for resharpening to remove the nick. This will have a serious impact on anyone looking for a smooth finished surface.

    • Always check for screws, nails, staples or other metal in material you plan to use on the jointer.

    • There is a metal detector near the planer for this purpose. All metal must be removed.

    • Dirt and grit is extremely hard on the jointer knives. Any dirty or weathered lumber should be thoroughly cleaned with a wire brush or belt sander before use on the jointer.

    • The jointer is a precision tool for thicknessing and resurfacing, NOT a magic wood cleaner. Please help keep the knives sharp and defect free!
